Are passports required for cruises? While US Citizens generally need a valid passport to leave and enter the country, there is a notable exception for cruise ship passengers. If you are taking a cruise that departs and returns from the same port of call and are traveling to Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, the Bahamas and/or Bermuda, you may use an original or certified copy of your birth certificate plus a government issued, laminated ID.
